FROM HARARE TO MUNICH: “SAME SUN” CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP THROUGH MUSIC

Zimbabwean musician Tariro neGitare and Munich-based band JAMARAM have released Same Sun, the official anniversary song commemorating 30 years of the twin-city partnership between Harare and Munich.

The song will premiere live on 21 June 2026 at the Zamanand Festival in Munich as part of the city’s official celebrations marking three decades of friendship, cultural exchange and cooperation between the two cities.

For Tariro neGitare, however, this moment is more than a performance. It is the continuation of a journey that began over a decade ago through a remarkable collaboration between the Zimbabwe German Society (Goethe-Zentrum Harare), the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), and Magitare Africa Trust.

In 2012, JAMARAM travelled from Germany to Zimbabwe for a cultural exchange programme made possible through partnerships involving HIFA, the Zimbabwe German Society, the City of Munich and other cultural stakeholders. During their time in Harare, the band performed at HIFA, facilitated workshops and connected with emerging Zimbabwean musicians.

Those encounters sparked friendships that would transcend borders.

The following year, Tariro neGitare joined fellow Zimbabwean musicians on a tour across Germany with JAMARAM, performing sold-out concerts in cities across the country. What began as a cultural exchange evolved into a long-term artistic partnership built on mutual respect, shared creativity and a belief in the power of music to unite people from different cultures.

Over the years, the relationship deepened through collaborative recordings, artist residencies, international tours and ongoing exchanges between musicians from Zimbabwe and Germany. Magitare Africa continued to play a role in nurturing opportunities for Zimbabwean artists to engage internationally while strengthening cultural diplomacy through music.

Now, more than ten years later, that story comes full circle.

Commissioned as part of the official celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the Harare-Munich partnership, Same Sun reflects the values that have sustained the relationship for three decades: friendship, solidarity, cultural exchange and a shared commitment to a better future.

“The song is a reminder that although we may live under different skies, we are all living under the same sun,” says Tariro neGitare. “What started as a cultural exchange became genuine friendship. This project is proof that music can build bridges that last for generations.”

The release also celebrates the many institutions, artists, organisers and citizens who have invested in keeping the Harare-Munich partnership alive through people-to-people connections.

The anniversary celebrations are also marked by a special Germany tour featuring Tariro neGitare and JAMARAM. The tour includes performances in Leutkirch, Munich, Starnberg and Chiemsee throughout June 2026. These concerts bring the story of the Harare-Munich partnership directly to audiences across Bavaria and beyond, showcasing a musical friendship that has endured for more than fourteen years. For many supporters who witnessed the early exchange programmes, the tour is a living testament to the lasting impact of cultural diplomacy and international artistic collaboration.
